ACUPUNCTURE FOR BACK PAIN AND MANY OTHER CONDITIONS
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture comes from traditional Chinese medicine and has been used consistently for more than 2,000 years. Acupuncture influences energy channels or meridians that run throughout the entire body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, these energy meridians flow through the body in regular patterns and nourish all the organs and tissues. There are 12 major channels flowing through the body and branching off into 365 mapped acupuncture points (currently recognized by the World Health Organization). In Chinese medicine, the flow of energy through these meridians is called the Qi (pronounced “chi”), and the movement of qi helps to balance yin and yang (hot or cold properties), balance an excess or deficiency in the body, and nourish the internal organs.
When the flow of the Qi is blocked or constrained, the internal organs and tissues fall out of balance. By needling one of the acupuncture points, the Qi is drawn out through the acupuncture point, unblocking the obstruction, and proper flow of energy is renewed. Each of the 12 major energy pathways connects to different organs and tissues. Hitting the right points and bringing the energy flow back into balance can help alleviate a whole host of ailments

Modern Science Behind Acupuncture
Recent scientific evidence has shown that acupuncture has a direct and immediate physiological effect. By stimulating the acupuncture points, the nervous system releases chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals help decrease inflammation, alleviate pain, and trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones that may restore balance to the body's hormonal system and over biochemical balance. This process makes acupuncture for back pain an excellent treatment technique. Acupuncture is scientifically demostrating that there is a strong energy component to our body's biochemistry.
“There is a lot of research to show that different neurotransmitters are released in the brain and those have different effects throughout the body, including pain reduction and reducing inflammation,” says Dr. Brian Berman, who is director of the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine and a professor of family medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Placebo studies have been conducted at major universities that demostrate the effects of acupuncture are real and can have lasting effects for as long as two years.
